1. What inspired you to move from your original field to software engineering/tech?

After five years as a community pharmacist, I realised the role simply wasn't the right fit for me. It didn't bring the enjoyment or fulfilment I had expected. Although I initially dismissed the idea of switching to tech due to my lack of coding experience, my partner encouraged me to try a mini coding course. To my surprise, I really enjoyed it. Conversations with someone who had completed a software engineering master's program further inspired me, showing that a career shift to tech was both possible and rewarding. The problem-solving and creativity involved in coding captivated me, and I quickly realised this was the path I wanted to pursue.

2. What was the final push that made you sign up for the conversion masters?

I decided to enrol in the conversion master's program at Ulster University to pursue a career change. Conversations with others who had made a similar switch showed me that transitioning into tech was very possible without needing to return to university for a 3—4-year undergraduate program. The one-year, intensive program at Ulster offered a structured pathway to transition into tech quickly, providing the skills I needed for a new start. It felt like an exciting and practical next step for my career and personal goals.

3. What role did your personal interests or passion play in making the career switch to tech?

I initially saw myself as a "tech novice" and never considered pursuing tech. However, as I became more curious about the technologies, we use daily, especially how websites and the internet function, my perspective changed. Learning about web development, cloud computing, and how these systems work fascinated me. This curiosity became a turning point, not just in switching careers, but in gaining a deeper understanding of a field that once felt unfamiliar. The problem-solving and creativity in tech aligned with my interests, sparking my desire to build a career in the field.

4. Was there a specific event or project that made you realize tech was the right career path for you?

A key moment that confirmed tech was the right path for me came during a group java application project in my first semester at university. I loved the challenge of building something from scratch, learning new concepts, and collaborating with others. Seeing how our collective efforts improved the project was rewarding. This experience showed me the value of teamwork, problem-solving, and collaboration in tech, making me realise it offered the intellectual stimulation and environment I was seeking.

5. How did you find the transition from your previous career to tech?

The transition from pharmacy to software engineering has been smooth and enjoyable. Starting with a training program and connecting with other graduates has provided valuable motivation and support. My experience in pharmacy has helped me collaborate effectively in my new role, and the biggest change has been the improved work-life balance. Hybrid working offers the flexibility to better manage both my personal and professional life, significantly improving my well-being and confirming that this was the right career choice.

7. How did your experience in your previous career give you a unique perspective in your new role as a software engineer at Allstate?

Working in pharmacy taught me the importance of teamwork, communication, and staying calm under pressure, especially in time-sensitive situations. I also developed strong skills in managing a heavy workload, prioritizing tasks, and meeting deadlines — all of which are valuable in software engineering. My background has instilled discipline, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in fast-paced, collaborative environments, which have been directly transferable to my work at Allstate.

8. What do you enjoy most about software engineering compared to your previous career?

What I enjoy most about software engineering is the problem-solving aspect, especially the focus on logic, systems, and efficiency. The challenges are more abstract compared to pharmacy, but still impactful for users and customers. I also appreciate that, even though it is not traditionally customer-facing, every decision in software engineering is aimed at improving the user experience, aligning with my desire to create valuable solutions. The continuous learning and opportunity for growth make software engineering a highly rewarding career for me.
