John S - Graduate Product Engineer.

What attracted you to Allstate?

I chose to start my tech career at Allstate because it gave me the opportunity to work on products that are used by millions of customers while continuing to learn and grow as an engineer. What first stood out to me was Allstate's strong reputation for investing in early-career talent through its graduate programme. I wanted to join a company where I could develop my skills, contribute to meaningful projects, and make an impact from the start.

What has been your favourite part of the graduate programme?

My favourite part of the graduate programme has been the variety of learning opportunities and the chance to work with experienced colleagues across different teams. It has allowed me to develop both my technical skills and professional confidence. In my role, I enjoy solving real-world problems, contributing to projects that deliver value to customers, and seeing the direct impact of the work my team produces.

What does a typical workday look like?

A typical day usually starts with a team stand-up where we discuss progress, priorities, and any challenges. From there, I spend time working with teammates to solve different problems. No two days are exactly the same, which keeps the role interesting, but there is always a balance between technical work, teamwork, and continuous learning.

Tell us about your pathway to Allstate?

My pathway to Allstate began through my interest in technology whilst working in various roles within insurance, banking, operations, and sales. I decided on a career change to pursue my interest in technology and leverage my years of experience working directly with customers. This led me to completing a conversion master's in software development at Queens University. I was drawn to Allstate because of its strong graduate programme and commitment to employee development. After applying, progressing through the interview process, and learning more about the company culture, I knew it was the right place to begin my career.

What advice would you give to future applicants?

My biggest piece of advice is to be yourself and show genuine enthusiasm for technology and learning. You do not need to know everything; Allstate values people who are curious, adaptable, and willing to grow. Take time to research the company, prepare examples that demonstrate your skills and experiences, and don't be afraid to talk about projects, challenges you've overcome, and what motivates you. Confidence, authenticity, and a willingness to learn go a long way.

What attracted you to Allstate?

Allstate has always been a company on my radar throughout my studies. I was motivated to become part of an organization where technology is used to make a real difference by improving experiences for users during significant moments in their lives. The Graduate Product Engineering role specifically appealed to me as it focuses on technical solutions that are inclusive and genuinely useful for the end user.

The culture at Allstate also really stood out to me, with a focus on inclusivity, diversity, continuous improvement, and employee wellbeing. Allstate understand the importance of flexible working for a good work life balance, with many opportunities to connect with colleagues via employee impact groups, socials, and connection days each month.

What has been your favourite part of the graduate programme?

My favourite part of the graduate programme is the dedicated training provided to ensure you are equipped with the skills needed before you join your team. Additionally, it provided the time for our cohort to bond together and learn from each other, providing another support system early in our careers. My role at Allstate as a Product Engineer consists of daily pair programming, providing solutions as a team to meet the needs of the business. It is a great working style, providing the chance to gain knowledge from other engineers.

What does a typical workday look like?

A typical day on the team starts with a daily stand-up meeting, which consists of a summary of the work completed the previous day, any pain points needing resolved and a plan of what we are working on that day. The team will then split up into our pairs for paired programming to complete our stories assigned on the board. Once a week the team will allocate time for a team retro meeting, for the whole team to discuss the week to date.

Tell us about your pathway to Allstate?

Although I completed my undergraduate degree in Communication with Counselling, I have always had an interest in technology. I decided to pursue a career change into technology by completing a MSc in Software Development. Transitioning into the industry felt like a natural progression for me. My goal was to apply my interpersonal skills and previous professional experience in a more technical and solution focused approach, to provide a better user experience. The Graduate Product Engineering role had everything I was looking for including, collaborative working and a strong focus on inclusivity with user-centered thinking at the forefront of the technical solutions. The application process was very smooth from start to finish with clear communication throughout my journey.

What advice would you give to future applicants?

My advice for applicants is to remember that your communication and teamworking skills are just as important as your technical skills. Don't be discouraged if you don't have all the skills listed in the job application. Show that you are willing to learn and develop. Take the opportunity and apply, as you never know where it might lead.

What attracted you to Allstate?

I chose to apply to Allstate because of how much effort they put into engaging with employees through various events and activities, such as monthly connection days, personal finance and health advice, and charity events. The number of events and opportunities to meet with colleagues makes it much easier to connect with others, even on a hybrid work schedule.

I began my tech career by graduating from the MSc Software Development course at Queens University Belfast, coming from a non-tech related undergraduate degree. The interview process felt suited for someone of my skill level and one of my interviewers attended this same course. The hiring process was challenging but fair, at each stage I felt supported by the people interviewing me and that they wanted me to succeed.

What does a typical workday look like?

My favorite aspect of the graduate program has been the training period. Getting to know the other graduates while working together on small projects was a great way to learn how the company operates in a low-stakes, learning-focused environment. My instructors were a pleasure to work with and made me feel like I could ask questions freely and learn from mistakes without pressure.

Tell us about your pathway to Allstate?

The morning usually begins with checking emails and incidents for anything that may have come in while I was away. From there, my work can vary quite a bit. I might be investigating SQL Server incidents, troubleshooting backup failures, looking into performance or disk space issues, creating or updating change requests, or supporting projects such as server builds and migrations. Typically, I will attend a stand-up meeting in the afternoon to align with the work schedule of my colleagues based in North America where we discuss what we’ve been doing and any issues, we are currently facing. Each day brings different tasks, and this has provided a great learning opportunity.

What advice would you give to future applicants?

Apply even if you don't feel ready. It can be easy to doubt your own skills and put off job applications after graduating but it's best to do it while the knowledge you have gained is fresh. Focus on brushing up on the fundamentals of whichever programming language or skills the specific job requires, don't worry about being an expert. You have everything to gain and nothing to lose. Good luck and I look forward to working with you soon!
