Celebrating Multigenerational Success at Allstate
January 14, 2025
Having recently marked 25 years in Northern Ireland, it's no surprise that Allstate is now welcoming different generations of families to join its ranks.
In this feature, we sat down with Lorcán Quail, Graduate Software Engineer in Claims, to discuss his career journey at Allstate and the unique experience of working alongside his dad, Diarmuid Quail. Diarmuid also chats to us about his experience in welcoming his son into the Allstate fold

What inspired you to pursue a career in tech, and did your dad's role at the company influence your decision?
I've always had an interest in technology because I enjoy solving problems. I wanted to pursue a career where I could do something like that every day. Dad's work at Allstate definitely had an influence on joining. He visited the states quite a few times when I was younger, and the fact that so much of what's done at Allstate is based in Belfast made it even more motivating to follow a similar path.
How does it feel to work at the same company as your parent, and has it shaped your perspective of the workplace?
Initially, I wasn't fully convinced about working at the same company as my dad when I joined on placement a few years ago. However, that perspective quickly changed. He's been incredibly helpful in understanding all of the different processes here and gives solid advice when I've been stuck. I think that working for the same company has only been a positive experience. The company is large enough that I feel like I can make my own career path, but also have good support for any questions that I might have. Free lifts to the office are always welcomed too.
What's one thing you've learned from/about your dad since joining the same company?
Apart from learning what he actually does every day, I've learned how important it is to build connections in the company and to never stop learning new skills as I move through my career.

How does it feel to see your child follow in your footsteps and join the same company?
I have enjoyed working for Allstate over 25 years now. During that time I have met many friends and have worked across several applications in various roles. I am really happy to see Lorcán join such a great company with all the opportunities I know Allstate has available to offer.
What advice did you give him before starting his role?
The only advice I could give him was to always keep learning and growing both his technical and soft skills. Always be inquisitive.
Have you had any opportunities to work together or share insights about the company?
Since Lorcán joined Allstate we haven't really had an opportunity to work together but we do frequently chat about how our day has gone and things we have been doing throughout the week.
